One of the biggest complaints of dishwashers is that it's not cleaning well. Here are a few easy steps to try first before calling to have an appliance repair company take a deeper look at why your dishwasher is not cleaning well.

If your dishwasher drains through the garbage disposal and you’ve recently had a new garbage disposal installed, the first thing you’ll want to check is if the knockout plug in the garbage disposal was removed during installation. You can check this by removing the dishwasher drain hose from the port of the garbage disposal and insert a long screwdriver inside the port. If the screwdriver does not enter the center of the garbage disposal, you’ll have to remove the knockout plug. Remember to wear eye and hand protection when completing this task. Use a hammer and the screwdriver and give a firm quick tap until the plug breaks free. Use a pair of pliers to remove the knockout plug from the inside of the garbage disposal.
A clog in the dishwasher drain hose is a common reason that a dishwasher won't drain. If you’re lucky, the clog may be where the drain hose attaches to the garbage disposal. When you remove the drain hose, you might be able to clear anything blocking the hose. Otherwise, the clog may be inaccessible and the hose will have to be replaced. After you’ve removed any debris, make sure that the drain hose is properly installed to create a drain loop under the sink so that water from the garbage disposal does not empty back into the dishwasher.
